Silent But Deadly Frog (SBD Frog)

Bass Flies, Fly Patterns

Hook: Sz 6 Mustad Stinger Bass Hook
Howard Leight Laser Lite Ear Plug
Rubber Legs, and painted to suit natural – or not. 5 mm doll eves
First, poke a hole completely thru ear plug with a hot needle, nail, soldering gun, etc.. harder to keep centered than it looks.

Wrap a solid thread base, coat with Flexament or Gel Super Glue/Zap-a-Gap, push body onto hook, it will get all mushed up, but will come back to form. If hole in body is too big, a layer of chenille may be needed to take up extra space. Paint to suit Tyer. Glue eyes on. Thread rubber legs thru a needle, and push thru body, tie knots in legs to simulate joints. Again, body will get mushed up, but will come back to form. Since paint covers up the outside of the foam, it will take a while to come back, but it will. Add weed guard if desired. And there you have it. The SBD Frog. I have field tested these a little, and caught a few fish, but am looking for some feedback, on these things, please feel free to critique-them. (not too brutal please.) and let me know what you think.

This fly was inspired by an article in Fly Tyer magazine. It featured Soft Foam poppers, made with layer upon layer of Hi-Tack Adhesive foam, and I knew I could make a soft foam Bass fly with less effort than that. Where I work, there is an area where people grab earplugs as they head out to the production floor, and there is always a pile of dirty, dusty, earplugs that no one is ever going to use, so every once in a while I liberate a few of them and this is one of my attempts at a soft bodied Bass “fly”.
